2) I agree with you for the most part, although I'd add that user buy in is going to be hard when you take a software platform (such as RHEL or Fedora) that uses one tool to manage updates for the entirety of your software set (yum, PackageKit, whatever frontend) and suddenly add one or more tools to specifically manage one or two software bundles. But then again, maybe somebody just hasn't tried hard enough, when at the end of the day, your bundles are likely to be Distro/version specific anyway. That's probably what makes SuSE's Open Build System so compelling for folks like Dell.
